Fairness and Safety in Sport
New Laws in Alberta affecting Female-only Sport Eligibility – in force September 1, 2025
As an in-scope Provincial Sport Organization, Darts Alberta is required to follow the newly adopted legislation – Fairness and Safety in Sport Act and Fairness and Safety in Sport Regulation. Darts Alberta is required to create policy regarding eligibility to compete in female-only dart leagues, classes, divisions, or tournament events. Darts Alberta’s policy also addresses eligibility to participate as a female when an event requires a female as part of a team.
The World Darts Federation (WDF) has recently announce requirements that are very similar to Alberta’s new female-only eligibility. You will start seeing WDF events referred to as “Open” and “Women’s/Girls”. At this time, this is only applicable to WDF events. No changes are being made at this time for tournaments that are only NDFC ranked, except those held in Alberta because of this new legislation. In the absence of a co-ed or open event being held in Alberta, it is permissible for those ineligible to play in female-only events to compete in male events.
